 Rifle Suicide Some crime scenes are surreal. At a quick glance, this woman dressed in her slip appears to be casually sitting on a toilet seat with her legs crossed. What is soon apparent is that she has no head, at least no head on her neck; it is on her lap. The scene may seem to be one of a crime of passion because it is so horrific and posed. However, this woman, who lived in Brooklyn’s Eastern Parkway, blew her own head off with a powerful rifle. The blood spatter on the walls and on her crossed legs indicate she was sitting in this position when the gun went off. |

On July 4th 1946, eleven guards of the Stutthof concentration camp were publicly hanged for what was described as “sadistic abuse of prisoners.” Among those hanged were five women: Gerda Steinhoff, Wanda Klaff, Jenny-Wanda Barkmann, Ewa Paradies and Elisabeth Becker, all of whom had been judged and sentenced during the first trial, at Gdańsk between April 25 and May 31, 1946. In 2006, Adolph Laudenberg was convicted of the 1972 strangling of Lois Petrie, 43, based on DNA evidence detectives obtained from a plastic foam cup and DNA recovered from the body at autopsy. Petrie was strangled on Christmas Eve that year at home in the Los Angeles harbor community of San Pedro. Police also suspect Laudenberg was connected to three other deaths: Catherine Medina, 50, whose nude body was found in a San Pedro park in 1974; Anna Felch, 54, of San Pedro, who was strangled and sexually assaulted in 1974; and Lehan Griffin, who was found dead in a San Francisco hotel room in 1975.
